Hyderabad: To alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity in Hyderabad, Metro MD NVS Reddy has announced an extensive expansion plan for the city’s metro network. The decision was taken up in a Cabinet meeting held on Monday led by chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, signalling the government’s commitment to invest in the city’s transportation infrastructure.

The expansion project, estimated to cost Rs 69,000 crores, will focus on extending the Hyderabad Metro around the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to cater to the growing demands of the city’s expanding population. During a press conference held on Tuesday, NVS Reddy revealed the key details of the expansion plan.

The proposed expansion will include the construction of a 22-km metro corridor from Patancheruvu to Narsingi. Additionally, a 40-km metro corridor will be developed from Shamshabad Jn (NH44) via Tukkuguda, Bongulur to Pedda Amberpet (NH65), providing accessibility for residents and commuters in these areas.

Furthermore, the metro corridor will be extended from Medchal (NH44) to Patancheruvu (NH65), spanning 29 km via Dundigal Jn, and from Tarnaka to ECIL, covering a distance of 8 km with five stops. The LB Nagar to Peddar Amberpet route will also be integrated into the metro network to improve connectivity for residents in this region.

The works for a Falaknuma Metro route from MGBS covering a distance of 5.5 km will commence soon, connecting five locations. Additionally, the Nagole to LB Nagar corridor will also be integrated into the metro system.

Moreover, a 28 km extension is planned from Shamshabad to Shadnagar via Kothur, aiming to cater to the transportation needs of residents and commuters in this region. The metro network will also be extended from Uppal to Bibinagar through Ghatkesar, spanning 25 km.

Additionally, a double elevated flyover will be constructed from JBS to Thumkunta and Paradise Metro Station to Kandlakoya which covers a distance of 12 km and 10 stops to streamline traffic flow and reduce congestion along the route.

With a total length of 415 km, 186 stations and double elevated flyovers, the expansion plan is set to revolutionise the city’s public transportation system and provide a comfortable and eco-friendly commuting option for its residents.

Opposition expresses concern

In response to the proposed plan, Mahesh Kumar Goud, TPCC working president, said, “Some officials are speaking as BRS workers while taking salaries from public funds. NVS Reddy became the MD of Metro Rail due to Congress’ merit. Congress brought Hyderabad Metro, with 70 per cent of the work completed during YSR’s reign. They promise to build the metro in three phases but did not reveal funding sources. Officials favouring KCR receive extensions even after retirement. NVS Reddy read the BRS pamphlet. The metro extension announcement is for Hyderabad votes.”
