Hyderabad: Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has written to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, urging swift action on the Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase-II project, citing delays in coordination between the State and the Centre.

In his letter, Kishan Reddy highlighted the growing traffic congestion in Hyderabad and stressed the urgent need to strengthen urban transport infrastructure through the expansion of the metro network.

Centre wants State to complete takeover of Phase-1 from L&T

The Union Minister said he recently met Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar to discuss the proposed second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail.

According to Kishan Reddy, the Centre has already agreed in principle to Phase-II.

However, it has made it clear that the State government must first complete the takeover of the existing Phase-I metro operations from L&T, including all agreements, decisions and financial transactions.

Only after this process is concluded will the Centre initiate further action on Phase-II.

Joint committee is yet to be constituted

Kishan Reddy recalled that both the Centre and the State had earlier agreed to form a Joint Committee to facilitate coordination for the takeover of Phase-I and preparatory work for Phase-II.

The proposed committee is to consist of two officials each from the Telangana government and the Union government. While the Centre has conveyed its readiness, the State government is yet to nominate its two officials, he noted.

The Union Minister urged the Chief Minister to immediately send the names of the State’s nominees so that the committee can convene meetings without further delay.

Appeal for speedy action

Emphasising public interest, Kishan Reddy appealed to the State government to fast-track the takeover of the metro network from L&T and subsequently submit Phase-II proposals to the Centre at the earliest.

He underlined that early completion of these steps would help accelerate the expansion of the Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) and provide much-needed relief to commuters in the rapidly growing city.
