Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched a city-wide drive to identify and address structurally unsafe buildings in a bid to avert disasters during the rainy season.
A recent survey by the civic body has flagged 428 buildings as structurally weak, prompting swift administrative action to protect public safety.
297 buildings declared dangerous
According to the GHMC report, 131 of the identified buildings are repairable, while 297 have been categorized as dangerous and unfit for occupancy. In response, GHMC has issued evacuation notices for the high-risk structures to prevent potential collapses during heavy rainfall.
Strict accountability for officials
During a video conference with zonal commissioners and town planning officials, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan underscored the importance of prioritizing public safety and warned of strict consequences for lapses.
āIf any untoward incident occurs in their respective jurisdictions, serious action will be taken against the concerned official,ā Karnan cautioned.
Suspension of new cellar approvals
In a preventive measure, the GHMC has halted the approval of new cellar constructions starting May 30, with the suspension to remain in effect until the end of the monsoon. This move is aimed at reducing the risk of flooding and structural instability in new developments.
Mandatory safety measures for ongoing projects
For ongoing construction projects, the civic body has instructed developers and engineers to adopt stringent safety protocols. These include the construction of retaining walls and ensuring that no water stagnation occurs in cellar areas.
City prepares for monsoon challenges
With forecasts of heavy rainfall in the coming weeks, the GHMC is working to minimize the risk of building collapses and flood-related hazards. The civic bodyās intensified efforts are aimed at safeguarding lives and infrastructure across Hyderabad during the monsoon season, Karnan said.
