Hyderabad: Newborn loses nose due to medical negligence; protests rock Fernandez Hospital
Shortly after birth, the baby was admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for phototherapy as recommended by Dr. Sai Kiran, the pediatric department in charge
By Newsmeter Network Published on 8 July 2023 2:55 AM GMTHyderabad: A newborn baby reportedly suffered nose necrosis due to excessive phototherapy at Fernandez Hospital in Hyderabad.
Imran Khan, the father of the baby, filed a police complaint on Friday stating that his son's nose had turned red during the treatment and later a portion of it fell off and turned black.
According to Imran Khan, his wife Arshiya Unnisa Khan was admitted to Fernandez Hospital on June 7, 2023, for delivery. The doctors recommended a C-section, which was performed on June 8. She delivered a healthy baby boy Abdul Fateh Khan. However, shortly after birth, the baby was admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for phototherapy as recommended by Dr. Sai Kiran, the pediatric department in charge.
While the baby was undergoing phototherapy, Imran Khan noticed that his son's nose had turned red. Concerned, he informed the hospital staff, who assured him that it was a normal occurrence. The situation worsened on June 22 when a part of the baby's nose fell off.
Sensing the trouble, Imran Khan consulted Dr. Sai Kiran and other doctors who admitted the hospital's mistake and promised to cover the expenses of the required treatment.
In order to address the baby's condition, the hospital management called upon Dr. Vasu, a specialist in Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery. Dr. Vasu informed Imran Khan that a cap would be placed on the baby's nose after two years. Furthermore, when the child reaches the age of 14, they will perform plastic/cosmetic surgery.
However, when Imran Khan requested the medical reports related to his son's condition, the hospital staff denied it and allegedly threatened him with dire consequences. The incident caused immense mental agony to Imran Khan and his wife.
Imran Khan said his son has been undergoing treatment for the past 27 days and he has spent Rs 3 lakh so far.
Frustrated with the situation, the family filed a complaint at the Narayanaguda Police Station. Later family staged a protest against the hospital. They were carrying posters of the baby and demanded action against the people involved.
Narayanaguda Police Station inspector G. Srinivas said a case of negligence has been registered against Fernandez Hospital under Section 337 of IPC.
