Hyderabad: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday started a two-day open hearing at Dr MCR HRD Institute, Hyderabad, to address complaints and rights violation cases related to Telangana.

The initiative aims to ensure timely grievance redressal and reinforce the accountability of public authorities.

Dual benches hear complaints

The Commission's proceedings are being conducted by two Division Benches. Division Bench–I is chaired by NHRC Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian, while Division Bench–II is headed by Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi and includes Hon’ble Member Vijaya Bharathi Sayani.

Full bench for cases of public importance

In addition to the two benches, a Full Bench was constituted to hear selected cases of significant public interest. These included suo motu cases taken up by the Commission, mostly related to caste-based discrimination, social boycott, police and custodial excesses, and violations of the right to life, dignity, liberty, and livelihood.

Transparent and timely hearings

The Commission ensured that the hearings were conducted in a time-bound, transparent, and empathetic manner. In cases where rights violations were established, specific directions were issued to the authorities, and monetary compensation was recommended for victims wherever appropriate.

Day Two: State officials and Civil Society interaction

On the second day, NHRC members will hold a meeting with senior state government officials. They will also engage with NGOs and civil society representatives to discuss systemic issues and strengthen rights protections.

NHRC’s mandate

The NHRC, established under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, holds civil court powers — including summoning records, examining witnesses, recommending disciplinary action, and awarding monetary relief.

Through open hearings and camp sittings, the Commission seeks to bridge the gap between citizens and the justice system, reinforcing its commitment to upholding constitutional rights and human dignity.

Top officials attend to facilitate action

Telangana Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao welcomed the NHRC Chairperson and members. Senior state officials, including Special Chief Secretary (Home) Shri Ravi Gupta, ADGP Shri Mahesh Bhagwat, Additional CP Shri Vikram Singh Mann, and I&PR Special Commissioner Ch. Priyanka, along with District Collectors and Superintendents of Police, attended to support and respond to the Commission’s proceedings.
