Hyderabad: Doctors at Hyderabad's Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) have set a new record by conducting 15 free kidney transplants in a month. It is for the first time that 15 kidney transplants have been performed in a Telangana government hospital without charging anything.
The transplants were conducted under Aarogyasri Health Insurance Plan, which offers coverage for all organ transplants to needy patients in Telangana. Among the doctors on the team were Rahul Devraj, chairman of the urology department, Ch. Ram Reddy, S. Vidyasagar, G.Ramachandraiah, G.V.Charan Kumar, and S.S.S. Dheeraj. The patients are doing well following the operation.
āIt has all been a team effort. Urologists, Nephrologists, anesthetists, and our technical team, all came together to make this happen. We have done 2 live donor transplants and 1 deceased donor transplant per week. In January, we had 9 deceased donors and the rest were live donors and that's how we were able to complete 15 kidney transplants in a monthā said Nephrologist Dr. G. Swarnalatha of NIMS hospital, Hyderabad.
Health Minister T Harish Rao congratulated the team of surgeons for achieving a new national record.
