Hyderabad: Nizam College students stage protest over denial of hostel accommodation

Hyderabad: Dozens of Nizam College students on Friday staged a protest demonstration after they were allegedly denied hostel accommodation.

The students alleged that despite fulfilling all eligibility criteria, there were unexplained delays and refusals in room allotments — a situation they described as both unfair and disruptive to academic life.

Delay in Hostel Allocation

Students who had applied for hostel accommodation reported that even weeks after the academic session began, they had not been allotted rooms. Some said they were forced to find temporary arrangements off-campus, incurring additional costs.

ā€œWe completed the process on time and submitted all documents. Still, there is no clarity from the administration. This delay is affecting our studies and mental peace,ā€ said a postgraduate student who requested anonymity.

Mess Closure Adds to Difficulties

Compounding the issue is the recent closure of the college mess due to unresolved financial issues. With no functioning mess on campus, students who do have hostel rooms have been left without basic meal services.

ā€œThis is not just about food — it’s about dignity. Students staying on campus have no access to regular meals. For many from lower-income backgrounds, this is unsustainable,ā€ said another student protester.

ABVP Leads Representation

Taking cognizance of the growing student unrest, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has stepped in to mediate and represent student concerns to the college administration.

In a statement, the student organization stated that it had taken the lead in raising these concerns, organizing peaceful representations, and demanding urgent administrative action.

Continued inaction on these issues, the statement said, shows a troubling lack of accountability. ā€œWhen core services fail under an institution’s leadership, a change in approach — and sometimes in leadership itself — becomes necessary.ā€

Administrative Silence

So far, the college management has not released an official statement addressing the protests or providing a timeline for resolving the accommodation and mess-related issues. Students say that repeated attempts to seek answers have gone unanswered.

Call for Immediate Intervention

The protesting students are demanding immediate room allocations for eligible candidates, restoration of mess services, and transparent communication from the administration going forward. Many have warned that if the situation persists, they will intensify their agitation in the coming days.

With the new academic term underway and students already under academic pressure, the lack of basic residential infrastructure has raised serious questions about the college’s preparedness and accountability.
