Hyderabad: In a major step towards addressing growing traffic congestion, the Telangana government has proposed a ₹941-crore double-decker corridor between LB Nagar and Hayathnagar along the busy NH-65 stretch.
The project is aimed at easing vehicular pressure on the Hyderabad–Vijayawada highway and improving connectivity for lakhs of daily commuters.
Project scope and structure
The proposed corridor will cover a 5.5-km stretch and is expected to benefit around 10–12 lakh residents across nearly 60–70 colonies.
Designed as a three-tier structure, the project will feature a service road at the ground level, the main highway above it, and a Metro rail corridor on top, offering a multi-layered solution to traffic congestion.
Funding and current status
The total project cost is estimated at ₹941 crore, with the Centre expected to contribute ₹741 crore and the State government ₹200 crore.
The proposal has already been submitted and is currently awaiting approvals. Officials indicated that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared once the project is included in the Centre’s annual plan.
Assembly discussion boosts proposal
The corridor proposal gained momentum during the Assembly’s Question Hour, where concerns were raised over severe traffic congestion between LB Nagar and Hayathnagar.
Responding to the issue, Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy confirmed that the government is actively pursuing the project as part of its broader urban mobility strategy.
Part of larger urban mobility plan
The government is also exploring similar double-decker corridor projects on other key stretches, including BHEL–Madinaguda, to tackle increasing vehicular load.
These projects are planned on the lines of the Nagpur model, incorporating modern infrastructure aimed at improving travel efficiency and reducing congestion.
Improved connectivity and travel time
Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time and ease traffic bottlenecks along NH-65. It is also likely to enhance connectivity between Hyderabad and Vijayawada, with travel time potentially coming down to two to three hours. Nearly 1.5 million residents are expected to benefit from these developments.
Local infrastructure concerns raised
During the session, legislators also highlighted other infrastructure issues. Concerns were raised over poor road conditions in Tandur, while the sanctioning of a flyover at Panama Junction in LB Nagar was welcomed as a step towards easing local congestion. There were also suggestions to construct foot overbridges near Ramoji Film City to improve pedestrian safety.
Statewide Road Development under HAM
Beyond Hyderabad, the state government is undertaking large-scale road infrastructure development under HAM Phase-I (Hybrid Annuity Model). A total of 6,092.37 km of roads are being developed across 34 packages, with tenders worth ₹13,006 crore already invited. Technical evaluation is underway for most packages, with the remaining expected to be finalised soon, the Minister said.
Focus on Transparency and Quality
To ensure transparency and timely execution, the government has introduced a Direct Debit Mechanism for contractor payments, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said.
He also reiterated the R&B departments commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure and strengthening the state’s transport network to provide safer and more efficient travel for the public.
