Hyderabad police add women constables to mounted wing, expands canine force
Hyderabad: In a first for the city, Hyderabad Police has inducted women constables into its mounted force and announced a major boost to its canine wing.
Commissioner of Police CV Anand described the twin initiatives as ‘a milestone in modern policing and gender inclusion.’
Women constables saddle up
Ten Armed Reserve women constables have successfully completed two months of rigorous riding and field training at the Goshamahal Mounted Unit.
They will now handle law-and-order bandobust, VIP security, crowd control and city patrolling alongside their male counterparts.
“This step encourages women to take the lead in every sphere of policing,” Anand said, calling it a proud moment for the Hyderabad force and a model for other states.
Dog squad strengthened for smarter policing
Acknowledging the heavy workload on the existing 34 canines, the City Police will increase the squad size to 54. Twelve high-grade dogs have already been procured in the first phase.
After training at the Integrated Intelligence Training Academy (IITA), the new entrants will focus on explosive detection, narcotics interdiction, and criminal tracking.
A special committee will handpick pedigree dogs from reputed breeders across the country to ensure quality and efficiency.

Modern kennels and stables on 11.5 acres
The relocation of the existing mounted ground and kennels at Goshamahal has been cleared due to the upcoming Osmania General Hospital block.
The government has approved funds for a new, purpose-built facility spread across 11.5 acres. It will feature modern horse stables and parade ground, kennels for 60 trained dogs, and a vehicle impound yard. Buildings allotted for the city security wing and tendering for the project will close on September 8.
Robust security for Ganesh Immersion
With the final phase of Ganesh idol immersion scheduled for Saturday, Hyderabad Police has lined up one of its largest deployments.
An overview of the security deployments:
- 29,000 police personnel will man routes in shifts
- 50,000 idols expected at Tank Bund alone
- Extra 250 CCTV cameras and 6 drones for surveillance
Commissioner Anand said efforts are underway to complete the immersion of the Khairatabad Ganesh between 6 am and 1:30 pm.

Ban on DJs for safety, not sentiment
Reiterating the ban on DJs during the festivities, Anand clarified it stems from public health concerns after high-decibel music caused deaths and illnesses in previous years.
“It is not a religious restriction, and the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi has fully cooperated,” he added.
