Hyderabad: Hyderabad Traffic Police has launched a special enforcement drive across the city to curb the use of mobile phones while driving or riding. Officials say that despite repeated warnings, many motorists continue to risk their lives by using their phones on the road.

According to the Traffic Police, 80,555 cases were booked for mobile phone usage while driving or riding between January 1 and October 12. During the special drives conducted on October 13 and 14, another 2,345 cases were registered.

Major causes of motor accidents

Using a mobile phone while driving distracts attention, delays reaction time and remains one of the leading causes of road accidents. The department has urged motorists to understand the dangers and strictly avoid using phones while driving.

“All motorists are warned that strict action will be taken against violators, including forwarding cases to court for penalties,” said D Joel Davis, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Hyderabad.

The Hyderabad Traffic Police has also appealed to citizens to cooperate in maintaining road safety and to report any traffic violations through official social media platforms or the Traffic Helpline (9010203626) and e-Challan helpdesk (8712661690).

Hyderabad Police Launches #SafeRideChallenge to Promote Road Safety

Meanwhile, Hyderabad Commissioner of Police VC Sajjanar on Monday launched the SafeRideChallenge, a social media initiative aimed at making road safety a trending topic.

Motorists are urged to take a short video or photo before starting their ride, showing themselves wearing helmets or fastening seat belts, and tag three friends or family members to do the same.

The challenge is designed to create a ripple effect across social media platforms, spreading awareness about safe driving practices among youth and daily commuters.
