Hyderabad police to impose strict penalties on drunken drivers, negligent New Year party organisers
Organisers planning events extending up to 1 am are required to apply for permission at least 10 days in advance
By Anoushka Caroline Williams Published on 29 Dec 2023 11:56 AM GMTHyderabad: As the city waits in anticipation of celebrating the upcoming New Year lavishly, Hyderabad police, led by city commissioner K Srinivas Reddy, has implemented strict measures to ensure public safety and order, particularly addressing concerns related to drunk driving.
In a recent announcement, commissioner Reddy issued guidelines specifically aimed at the management of three-star and above hotels, bars, clubs, pubs, and restaurants hosting New Yearās Eve celebrations. Organisers planning events extending up to 1 am are required to apply for permission at least 10 days in advance.
The guidelines emphasise the installation of CCTV cameras with recording facilities at all entry and exit points of the property, including parking spaces. Additionally, organisers must deploy an ample number of security guards to maximise security during the festivities.
Commissioner Reddy emphasised the consequences of drunk driving, stating, āIf people are caught drunk driving, their license can be suspended for three months and above, or permanently if they are caught at night.ā The directive underscored the commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users during the celebratory period.
Vehicle owners will be held responsible for minors driving
Furthermore, the guidelines address specific concerns such as the prohibition of minors driving vehicles, holding vehicle owners responsible for minors found driving, and preventing noise pollution by prohibiting the removal of silencers from two-wheelers. Speed driving, dangerous driving, and racing in public places will also be punishable under Sections 183 and 184 of the MV Act.
The guidelines extend to bars and pubs, emphasising that minors are strictly prohibited. Organisers are tasked with ensuring the decency of apparel, dance acts, gestures, and words, maintaining sound levels at equal or less than 45 decibels, and restricting passes, tickets, and coupons to the venueās capacity.
Rules on serving alcohol
Pubs and bars are strictly prohibited from serving alcohol beyond the permitted hours by the Excise Department. In a commitment to public safety, establishments are responsible for arranging drivers or cabs for customers in a drunken state to ensure their safe return home.
Commissioner Reddy concluded the guidelines by highlighting the prohibition of the display and use of fireworks during the New Year celebrations. The comprehensive measures aim to create a safe and enjoyable environment for residents to usher in the New Year responsibly.
