Hyderabad: Hyderabad has recorded a marginal decline in fatal accidents and a significant drop in overspeeding-related deaths in 2024.

According to official statistics, a total of 3,058 road accidents were reported in 2024, resulting in 286 fatalities and 3,393 injuries.

This information was disclosed in response to a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by city-based resident Lokender Singh, who sought data on traffic enforcement under the Hyderabad Commissionerate jurisdiction.

Gradual decline in fatalities

Fatal accidents dropped from 327 in 2023 to 286 in 2024. This continues a fluctuating trend over the past decade, where 2016 saw the highest number of fatal cases (396), and the lowest was recorded during the pandemic-hit year 2020 (248 fatalities).

Grievous and simple injuries also saw a surge in 2024, with 2,473 and 299 cases, respectively, contributing to the year’s total of 3,393 injuries, one of the highest in the past 10 years.

Overspeeding-related fatalities on the decline

Over speeding, which has been one of the leading causes of road fatalities, has shown a sharp decline in 2024. Only 80 fatal cases were attributed to overspeeding this year, compared to 165 in 2023 and 215 in 2021.

The data indicates a possible impact of increased enforcement, awareness campaigns, and technological interventions like speed cameras and real-time monitoring.

Vehicle population trends

Despite the growing population and traffic density, the vehicle registration data paints an inconsistent picture. The total number of vehicles in Hyderabad in 2024 stood at 1,36,607—a decline from 1,71,898 in 2023.

The highest spike in the last decade was in 2018 with over 2.18 lakh vehicles registered, while the lowest was in 2021 with just over 1.23 lakh.

Hyderabad’s vehicle population crosses 86 lakh mark

As of March 2025, the total number of registered vehicles in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits has reached 86,32,336. Among the three commissionerates, Hyderabad city leads with 40,45,083 registered vehicles, followed by Cyberabad with 24,76,637, and Rachakonda with 21,10,616.

The steadily rising vehicle population reflects the city's rapid urban growth and underscores the increasing pressure on its traffic infrastructure.

Decade Overview (2015–2024)

Between 2015 and 2024, Hyderabad recorded:

Total Accidents: Consistently averaging between 2,400–3,000 per year

Total Fatalities (10-year peak): 396 in 2016

Total Injuries (10-year peak): 3,393 in 2024

Overspeeding Fatalities (Peak): 215 in 2021

While the number of overall accidents remains high, the steady decrease in fatalities and overspeeding cases may signal that road safety measures are having a tangible effect. However, the surge in injuries calls for a renewed focus on accident prevention and emergency response mechanisms.
