Hyderabad: Roots College student Sai Charan held for mowing down private employee at Champapet
Hyderabad: Saidabad police on Wednesday arrested a 21-year-old youth in connection with a hit-and-run incident on Champapet Road that claimed the life of a 27-year-old man a few days ago.
The arrested youth was identified as Sai Charan, a student of Roots College in Hyderabad. The victim was identified as Deverashetty Sunil, a private employee and resident of Sai Ram Colony in Saidabad.
A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has also been registered against Sai Charan, the police said.
Incident in early hours
The incident occurred around 12.30 am on January 17. Sai Charan was driving a car when he rammed a motorcycle from behind.
Sunil was riding back home at Green Park Colony. The impact caused the car to drag the motorcycle for nearly 50 to 100 metres before fleeing the scene.
Victim succumbs to injuries
Local residents rushed Sunil Kumar to a private hospital, where he was admitted in a critical condition. He remained under treatment for over a day and succumbed to his injuries on January 19, police said.
CCTV footage cracks the case
Police said CCTV cameras installed along the stretch captured the car dragging the two-wheeler, providing a crucial lead in the investigation. Using the footage, police traced the vehicle involved in the crash.
Prime accused arrested
During the probe, police identified three persons who were in the car at the time of the accident. The prime accused, Sai Charan, was driving the vehicle. He was arrested, produced before a court on Wednesday, and remanded to judicial custody.
Two others absconding
Police said two other occupants of the car are absconding, and special teams have been formed to trace and arrest them. Further investigation is underway.
