Hyderabad: Schoolchildren’s lives at risk; drunk drivers ferry students to schools

Hyderabad: School bus and auto drivers under the influence of alcohol are putting thousands of schoolchildren’s lives at risk in Hyderabad. Recent traffic checks have revealed a disturbing trend of intoxicated drivers ferrying students across the city.

BAC over 400

On Friday, traffic police stopped a school bus near Ameerpet that was carrying 40 students. Officers found the driver driving recklessly, ignoring traffic signals and applying brakes abruptly.

A breath analyser test showed his Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) level was over 400 mg%, shocking officials. When reprimanded for driving in such a dangerous state, he casually responded, “This is nothing new for me.”

Drunk auto driver argues with police

In another incident near Abids, an auto driver transporting students was found drunk. When police questioned him, he argued, saying, “I drank last night, why are you testing me now?”

400 auto drivers booked in Special Drive

During a special drive conducted last month, Hyderabad traffic police booked 400 auto drivers for carrying students beyond the permitted capacity. Breath analyser tests revealed that 26 auto drivers and 14 school bus drivers were driving under the influence.

Parents pay high fees for safety

Most parents prefer school buses despite their high transport fees, which range from Rs 4,000 per month per student, depending on the school and distance. Some parents opt for autos to cut costs, unaware of the risks involved.

Traffic Police issues warning

Joint Commissioner (Traffic) D Joel Davis said, “Driving under the influence, especially when transporting school children, is extremely dangerous. We will write to all school managements, asking them to ensure drivers are sober before handing over bus keys. Parents must also be cautious while choosing auto drivers.”
