Hyderabad sees 17% decrease in crime rate from last year: CV Anand

Hyderabad: Hyderabad has seen a significant decline in crime over the past year, with the overall crime rate dropping by 17 per cent, outgoing Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand said on Sunday.

He attributed the improvement to the coordinated efforts of the city’s police force.

Festivals and public events went peacefully

Speaking at a crime review meeting with senior officers, Anand praised the dedication of the commissionerate’s staff, noting that their collective commitment ensured that festivals, processions, and public gatherings were conducted peacefully.

“The Hyderabad City Police have worked together as a team to safeguard peace and security, achieving remarkable results. With collective effort, we can achieve anything. Let us continue with the same spirit and work towards making Hyderabad a ‘Crime-Free City’,” he remarked.

Overall crime shows a steady decline

Official data indicates that total registered cases dropped from 38,206 (Sep 2023–Aug 2024) to 31,533 (Sep 2024–Aug 2025), marking a 17 per cent reduction.

Key changes include murder cases, which decreased from 85 to 73; attempt-to-murder cases down by 29 per cent; Hurt cases down by 15 per cent; kidnapping cases have gone down by 12 per cent; cybercrime cases, down 14 per cent, with detection rate improving from 40 per cent to 42 per cent.

Property crimes witness a major drop

Property-related offences saw a significant fall, with cases reducing from 5,484 to 4,082 (26 per cent decline). Robbery cases nearly halved, while thefts dropped by 27 per cent. The recovery rate of stolen property rose slightly from 54 to 55 per cent.

Crimes against women: Progress and concerns

Cases involving women showed mixed trends: Rape cases have gone down from 632 to 485 (a 23% drop); outraging modesty has gone down by 20 per cent; kidnappings, down 10 per cent, and dowry deaths have shown a slight increase from 11 to 13 cases.

Police urged to maintain momentum

The review meeting was attended by Additional CPs, Joint CPs, and DCPs of various zones. Anand commended the officers’ efforts and encouraged them to sustain the momentum in reducing crime across Hyderabad, according to a police statement.
