Hyderabad: Amidst the ongoing Karthika Masam festivities in Hyderabad, the prices for chicken meat have gone down, a substantial decline following weeks of continuous surges. Chicken prices, which were previously soaring close to Rs 300 per kg, have now experienced a significant drop, settling at Rs 151 for skin-on and Rs 172 for skinless.

This decline has been accompanied by a considerable drop in chicken and other meat sales throughout the city. These current rates represent the lowest observed prices in several months. The surge in chicken prices was attributed to various factors, including ongoing election campaigning.

Decrease in demand during religious observance

Karthika Masam, considered highly auspicious, sees devotees engaging in prayers and offerings, emphasising the worship of plants and trees, along with the practice of non-violence. Many adherents choose to consume only vegetarian food during this month-long period of observance.

The advent of Karthika Masam has seemingly reversed the amount of consumption, leading to a decline in the demand for chicken and meat across the city. Local chicken shop owners highlighted the annual trend of reduced chicken demand during Karthika Masam.

“Karthika Masam has affected our business. Meat consumption came down, and prices also went down due to poor demand. Every year, the demand for chicken drops during this period. The price fell significantly this year due to increased production but decreased demand,” said Karnati Babu, a chicken trader.

Market experts anticipate prices to stabilise by the end of the Karthika month, suggesting a potential continuation of the current rates for the next few weeks.
