Identified as M. Srikanth, he was on his way home from school when the incident occurred.
Srikanth was the only child of Ammulu who lost her husband five years ago. The mother-son duo were living in Ananthayya Colony, Neredmet.
According to Neredmet Inspector Sandeep Kumar, Srikanth had stopped at the roadside due to heavy traffic. D. Vijay Kumar, an 84-year-old retired IPS officer, allegedly drove his car at high speed and hit the young boy, killing him on the spot.
Ammulu has been raising Srikanth single-handedly since her husband, Subbaiah, died after falling from a tree five years ago. Subbaiah's death left Ammulu to shoulder the responsibility of their son.
A pall of gloom descended on the locality when the news of Srikanth reached home. Witnesses said Ammulu collapsed in grief. Relatives gathered at the local police station to demand justice for the young boy.
Kushaiguda ACP Mahesh assured the grieving family that the police would thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure that the responsible party is held accountable.
The driver, D. Vijay Kumar, has been arrested and is currently in police custody.
