Hyderabad: Stolen bike recovered after viral challan sparked online debate

Hyderabad: The saga of the stolen bike that captured the city’s attention has reached a successful conclusion.

The vehicle, which became a viral sensation after its owner received an automated traffic challan three months after filing an FIR, has been officially recovered by the Habeeb Nagar police.

The owner, who had initially turned to social media to express his frustration after receiving a high-resolution challan photo of his stolen bike being ridden by a stranger, took to the same platform to express his gratitude toward the authorities.

In a post, the owner wrote, “‘Our Friendly Police Are Truly Outstanding.’ Our stolen vehicle has been recovered. Thank you, SHO Habeebnagar, Habeeb Nagar PS, Hyderabad City Police, and the traffic department for your quick support and action. From day one until now, I am truly grateful for your help. Salute to the work of the police.”

The case had previously ignited a heated debate across digital platforms. When the owner first shared the challan photo, it sparked a divide among netizens. While many lauded the efficiency of the city’s traffic surveillance system for providing “full HD evidence,” others cautioned against the dangers of digital vigilantism, arguing that the rider in the photo could have been an innocent buyer who unknowingly purchased a stolen vehicle.

The viral post eventually reached the highest levels of the department, prompting Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar to intervene.

Following the Commissioner’s directive, the SHO of Habeeb Nagar formed a dedicated team to track down the suspect. Their swift investigation led to the recovery of the bike and the resolution of the case.
