Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has teamed up with Google to launch a pilot project powered by generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to modernize civic services.
The initiative seeks to find sustainable, technology-driven solutions to pressing urban issues while enhancing the efficiency of citizen services.
Focus on intelligent, responsive governance
GHMC Commissioner R V Karnan said the project is part of a larger vision to build a responsive and intelligent city administration. Once tested successfully, the pilot will be expanded city-wide, paving the way for AI-enabled governance in Hyderabad.
A virtual meeting to review the project roadmap was held recently. Key participants included MA&UD Secretary Ilambarthi, GHMC Commissioner Karnan, and IT Additional Commissioner Anuraag Jayanthi, along with representatives from Google.
AI tools to enhance public service delivery
The project will deploy advanced AI systems to streamline and upgrade various GHMC services. These include an AI-based search bar for government websites, chatbots and intelligent search tools for government staff, a classification system for citizen enquiries, blockchain-based verifiable credentials for G2C (Government-to-Citizen) services, AI-driven tender evaluation systems, smart parking management solutions, and optimisation of solid waste management.
Officials noted that these tools will help improve transparency, speed up service delivery, and reduce manual intervention.
Tech support in Health, Transport, and Urban Planning
Beyond citizen services, Google's AI will also support GHMC in broader urban planning and public health management. Key features include real-time tracking of public buses via Google Maps, road safety and traffic prediction models, Google Cloud APIs for FHIR-compliant electronic health records, a citywide health analytics platform, and early detection and prevention systems for vector-borne diseases.
Hyderabad as a Smart City Model
Karnan said the pilot has the potential to transform Hyderabad into a national model for AI-driven civic administration. By combining smart technology with government service delivery, the GHMC hopes to address systemic inefficiencies and offer faster, more accurate solutions to urban challenges.
Once the pilot phase concludes, the project will be evaluated for scalability across Hyderabad and potentially other urban centres in Telangana, the GHMC Commissioner added.
