Hyderabad: A businessman paid Rs 12,49,999 (almost Rs 12.50 lakh) to buy a fancy car registration number ‘TG 07 R 9999’, through the online bidding held by Telangana Regional Transport Authority (RTA) at its Manikonda office.
Congruent Developers secured the coveted number on Tuesday as a status symbol. The transport department officials in Manikonda earned Rs 52.6 lakh in a single day by auctioning fancy vehicle registration numbers.
These unusual numerals have sparked intense bidding. Some of the other high-end bids for high-end fancy number plates were TG 07 AA 0009, which was auctioned for Rs 8,50,000 and claimed by Rudra Infrastructures Pvt Limited, and Fuji Software Solutions spent approximately Rs 4,77,000 to acquire the fancy number TG 07 AA 0001.
“Due to the wide range of preferences expressed by car owners, the demand for personalised registration numbers is only increasing. The transport department is expecting future registration number auctions to generate a steady flow of interest and income as fancy numbers continue to gain popularity,” a senior official from the transport department said.
