Hyderabad: In a major push towards clean and sustainable urban transport, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (Telangana State Road Transport Corporation) has initiated steps to operationalise 2,200 electric buses across the Greater Hyderabad region.
As part of this effort, a high-level coordination meeting was held on Thursday at the headquarters of the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (TGSPDCL) to finalise arrangements for providing electricity connections to EV charging stations.
Charging stations across key depots
Officials informed that EV charging stations will be established at 25 TGSRTC depots within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.
In addition, two charging points will come up at the Suryapet depot, while one charging station each will be set up at the Sangareddy and Nalgonda depots.
The total power requirement for operating these charging facilities is estimated at around 124 megawatts.
Infrastructure and Power Supply Planning
Detailed discussions were held on the infrastructure needed for setting up the charging stations, including laying of power lines, establishment of switching stations, and substations.
TGSRTC officials explained the logistical requirements, while TGSPDCL engineers outlined the technical steps involved in providing uninterrupted power supply.
Large-scale rollout this year
TGSRTC Vice Chairman and Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy, said the corporation is planning a large-scale rollout of electric buses in the Greater Hyderabad area within the current year.
He added that TGSRTC would make available suitable space at its depots and other locations for setting up substations and switching stations required for EV charging.
Estimates by February 1
TGSPDCL Chairman and Managing Director Musharraf Faruqui directed electricity officials to examine the applications submitted by TGSRTC, prepare detailed cost estimates by February 1, and initiate the required works without delay.
The initiative is expected to significantly strengthen Hyderabad’s electric mobility ecosystem and reduce the city’s carbon footprint, he added.
Senior officials from TGSRTC, TG TRANSCO, REDCO, and TGSPDCL were also present.
