Hyderabad to see hot days, thunderstorms in evenings: IMD
Hyderabad: Hyderabad will continue to experience hot and humid conditions during the day, followed by scattered thunderstorms and heavy showers in the evenings over the coming days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and independent weather forecasters.
IMD forecast
In its Friday morning bulletin, IMD-Hyderabad said there are “very likely chances of light to moderate rain or intense thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds” in the city towards evening or night.
It added that mist or hazy conditions are expected later in the night and into early Saturday.
The maximum and minimum temperatures for Friday are likely to settle around 31°C and 22°C, respectively.
Independent observations
Independent forecaster T Balaji noted that Hyderabad will once again see a sharp rise in daytime temperatures before storms arrive.
“Today (Friday), till late afternoon/evening, it will be very hot and humid. Later, intense thunderstorms and heavy rains likely occurred in a few places during the evening and night. Till evening, mostly dry and very humid weather in Hyderabad,” he posted on X.
Outlook for the coming week
According to the IMD’s extended outlook and model predictions from independent weather trackers, this alternating pattern of daytime heat and evening storms is expected to continue through the next week.
Saturday and Sunday are likely to remain warm and humid, with thunderstorms breaking out in parts of the city by evening. Monday is expected to bring heavier showers, with cloud cover persisting through the day and night.
From Tuesday onwards, Hyderabad may see a mix of overcast skies, occasional sunshine, and intermittent thunderstorms, particularly in the late evenings. Maximum temperatures are forecast to remain around 30–32°C, while minimums will hover near 22–24°C.
Why this pattern persists?
Meteorologists explain that the weather cycle is being driven by high atmospheric moisture combined with daytime heating.
“Moist south-westerly winds are bringing in humidity, while the city’s heat during the afternoon creates instability in the atmosphere. This sets the stage for convective thunderstorms in the evening. Urban heat retention also delays cooling, making the city feel hotter and more humid until showers arrive. With the monsoon season gradually withdrawing, such localized and intense rain spells are common during September,” said meteorologist KS Sridhar, speaking to NewsMeter.
Advisory
Authorities advise residents to stay prepared for sudden evening downpours, which may cause waterlogging and traffic disruptions in low-lying areas.
Motorists are urged to drive cautiously due to reduced visibility during rain and mist. Staying hydrated during the day and limiting direct sun exposure in the afternoon can also help reduce heat stress.
