Hyderabad: United Way of Hyderabad (UWH), in collaboration with HSBC Global Service Centres, India, has completed the first year of its Biodiversity Conservation and Energy Transition Project at Nehru Zoological Park (NZP).
Launched in November 2024, the initiative focuses on integrating renewable energy solutions and sustainable mobility within the zoo, positioning it as a model for environmental stewardship in India.
Renewable Energy and Clean Mobility Solutions
The project introduced significant changes aimed at reducing the zooās carbon footprint. Among the key interventions were the deployment of electric vehicles and solar-powered infrastructure:
13 electric bikes with carriers for animal care staff,
6 electric bikes for other zoo staff,
6 battery-operated buggies for visitor transport,
80 solar street lights installed across the park.
These measures are part of a larger strategy to shift towards clean energy and sustainable management practices. Visitors and staff now experience quieter, emission-free transport, contributing to a greener environment within the zoo premises.
Reflections from Project Stakeholders
The handover ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including Mr. Paul Raddon, Head of HSBC Global Service Centres, who praised the projectās achievements in renewable energy.
Rekha Srinivasan, CEO of United Way of Hyderabad, highlighted the environmental impact of the initiative, stating, āThis initiative has already started making a measurable difference in reducing the zooās carbon footprint. Through innovative interventions, we are not only enhancing biodiversity conservation but also fostering environmental responsibility among visitors.ā
Mamatha Madireddy, Head of HSBC Global Service Centres, India, also expressed her support, saying, āOur support for providing renewable energy and clean mobility solutions at The Nehru Zoological Park reflects our enduring passion for building a thriving future for businesses, communities, and the planet. This initiative is another step towards a cleaner and more resilient ecosystem. By embracing green solutions, we are not just reducing our footprint; we are setting a precedent for sustainable progress.ā
Sustainable Management and Future Plans
Dr. Sunil Hiremath (IFS), Director of Nehru Zoological Park, explained how the initiative would enable better allocation of funds for infrastructure maintenance, research, and outreach programs. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was exchanged between NZP and UWH, ensuring a long-term commitment to sustainable development and future collaborative projects.
The event also included a guided tour for attendees to view the solar infrastructure and electric mobility solutions, along with discussions on sustainable zoo management practices.
Looking Ahead: Year 2 of the Project
Building on the successes of the first year, the project aims to expand its sustainability initiatives in its second phase. Upcoming plans include:
A wildlife ambulance and a rescue van powered by electric mobility,
Solar fencing for enhanced security,
A 60-kW solar power generation system to further reduce carbon emissions.
These initiatives aim to strengthen Nehru Zoological Parkās position as a benchmark for eco-friendly practices in India.
