A pair of meerkats and a white-eared marmoset were released into the enclosure for public display as the Hyderabad Zoo completed 59 years and entered its 60th year.
R.M.Dobriyal, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Telangana said the first week of October is also celebrated as National Wildlife Week.
"Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad is known as one of the best zoos in Asia in all aspects of wildlife conservation," he said.
The Zoo also announced an addition to its Asiatic lion population. Six-month-old cub has been added to the family. Now, the Hyderabad Zoo has 12 Asiatic lions.
The cub was born to one of the lionesses on the lion safari, according to zoo curator S. Rajasekhar. He estimated that it would take at least six months for the cub to be released into the enclosure for union with her mother Saina.
An open fish pond with a variety of fishes was also opened to the public on the occasion.
