Hyderabadi gay couple move SC seeking recognition of same-sex marriages

Hyderabad: The Supreme Court of India on Friday agreed to hear a petition filed by a Hyderabadi gay couple seeking recognition of same-sex marriages in India. The apex court has issued a notice to the Centre seeking its response.

The Bench of Chief Justice of India D.Y Chandrachud and Justice Hima Kohli heard the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Supriyo Chakraborty and Abhay Dang from Hyderabad. They sought the extension of the right to marry a person of one's choice to LGBTQ+ citizens as well.

The couple has been living together since the Covid-19 pandemic and is upset by the fact that they do not enjoy the same rights as a married couple.

It has been contended in the petition that the Supreme Court has always guarded the rights of inter-caste and inter-faith couples to marry a person of their choice and it should continue the constitutional journey by including same-sex LGBTQ+ couples.

The CJI Bench directed the Centre to file a counter affidavit and posted the matter after four weeks.
