Hyderabadi Swiggy user spent whopping Rs 6L on 8,428 plates of idlis

Hyderabad: A Swiggy user from Hyderabad ordered the maximum number of idlis last year, spending a whopping Rs. 6 lakhs on this south Indian delicacy. The user from Hyderabad ordered 8,428 plates of idlis, including orders placed for friends and family, both while traveling across cities like Bangalore and Chennai.

Swiggy India released an analysis on the occasion of World Idli Day, celebrated on 30 March every year. It revealed that idlis are the second most ordered breakfast item on Swiggy, after masala dosa.

According to Swiggy, Hyderabad is among the top five cities that order idli the most. The others include Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, and Coimbatore.

33 million plates of idlis delivered

Swiggy delivered 33 million plates of idlis in the last 12 months, indicating the immense popularity of this dish among customers. Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai are the top three cities where idlis are ordered the most. Other cities that follow closely are Mumbai, Coimbatore, Pune, Vizag, Delhi, Kolkata, and Kochi.

“India gorged on almost 33 million plates of Idli on Swiggy in this past year. Swiggy has delivered 33 million plates of Idlis in the last 12 months, indicating the immense popularity of this dish among customers. Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai are the top three cities where idlis are ordered the most. Other cities that follow closely are Mumbai, Coimbatore, Pune, Vizag, Delhi, Kolkata, and Kochi,” according to the Swiggy analysis.

Swiggy also found that customers tend to order other dishes such as sambar, coconut chutney, karampuri, medu veda, saagu, ghee, red chutney, Jain sambar, tea, coffee along with their idlis.

Favourite time to binge on idlis: 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. is the most popular time to order idlis, with consumers from Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Coimbatore, and Mumbai also ordering idlis during dinner time.

Favourite types of idlis: Bangaloreans – Rava Idli, Chennaites – Ghee Podi Idli, Hyderabadis – Karampodi Ghee Idli, Mumbaikars- Idli Vada.

Different types of idlis ordered

Rava idli is more popular in Bangalore than in any other city, while ghee/neyi karam podi idli is popular in cities across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Thatte idli and mini idli also feature regularly amongst idli orders across all cities.

Idlis are not just a popular breakfast item but also a healthy one, often touted as one of the most important meals of the day. The analysis reveals that idlis are the second-most ordered breakfast item on Swiggy, after masala dosa.

The top five restaurants that are popular for their idlis are A2B - Adyar Ananda Bhavan in Bangalore and Chennai, Varalakshmi Tiffins in Hyderabad, Sangeetha Veg Restaurant in Chennai, and Udipi’s Upahar in Hyderabad.
