Hyderabad’s most pressing civic concerns: Blocked drains and flooded colonies
Hyderabad: With monsoon rains battering the city, nala encroachments and flooding issues have become the most pressing concerns for residents.
On Tuesday, HYDRAA Prajavani received 49 petitions, more than 30 of them related to blocked drains and inundated colonies.
Citizens complained that diverted or encroached nalas were preventing floodwaters from reaching lakes, instead submerging residential areas.
Flow disrupted in Ameenpur
Residents of Ameenpur village, Sangareddy district, alleged that the diversion of the Bandankommu tank nala has left nearly eight colonies vulnerable to flooding. Locals turned up in large numbers to lodge their grievances.
Stagnation in Krishna Nagar
In Yousufguda’s Krishna Nagar, residents said even brief rainfall leaves them marooned indoors. While partial desilting of nalas improved flow in some stretches, incomplete cleaning has worsened waterlogging. They appealed to HYDRAA to widen the nala for lasting relief.
Encroachment in Mayuri Nagar
Residents of Mayuri Nagar, Serilingampally constituency, complained that an individual had encroached on a nala and built a compound wall across it. The obstruction has caused severe water stagnation in the colony, the local Welfare Association stated.
Land row in Madhavinagar
In Kukatpally’s Madhavinagar, locals alleged that outsiders were attempting to grab land reserved for community use by producing dubious documents. Spread over six acres and home to nearly 500 families, residents demanded protection of their rights over the common land.
Blockage in Tatti Annaram
In Tatti Annaram village, Ranga Reddy district, a wall built across a small nala has led to water stagnation. Students of Shreyas Institute of Engineering and Technology complained that the flooding has restricted access to their campus. Despite repeated appeals, no action has been taken, they said.
Hayathnagar colonies under threat
Residents from Sahebnagar Khallan near Nagarjuna Sagar road said colonies are facing submersion as Kappala Cheruvu has filled to capacity.
Housing complexes, including the three-phase Sagar Complex and surrounding colonies like Hariharapuri, are under threat of flooding. Locals demanded urgent intervention to prevent further damage.
HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath reviewed the complaints and directed officials to take corrective action. He also assured petitioners that he would personally inspect certain locations.
