Hyderabad: Telangana continued to experience a sharp winter chill on Monday, with several districts and outer regions of Hyderabad registering single-digit minimum temperatures.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has forecast a further dip of 2°C to 3°C in the next two days due to persistent dry and cold winds flowing into the state.
Sirpur in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad was coldest at 7°C
Districts in northern Telangana, Adilabad, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, and Nirmal recorded the steepest decline in night temperatures.
The coldest location in the state was Sirpur (Kumuram Bheem Asifabad) at 7°C.
What is the reason for the cold weather
Meteorologist KS Sridhar, speaking to NewsMeter, explained the pattern: “Telangana is currently under the influence of dry northeasterly winds that travel from central India. These winds lower humidity and accelerate nighttime cooling, especially in open and elevated districts.”
He added that the clear skies are allowing heat to escape rapidly during the night.
Hyderabad’s outskirts also dip to single digits
Several areas around Greater Hyderabad continued to record unusually low temperatures:
• Ibrahimpatnam: 8.2°C
• University of Hyderabad (UoH): 8.8°C
• Serilingampally: Between 8°C and 9.8°C
• Rajendranagar: 10°C
City cooling explained
“Peripheral regions of Hyderabad cool faster due to lower built-up density and higher green cover. These local factors, combined with the statewide wind pattern, are responsible for the single-digit temperatures in the outskirts.” Sridhar noted.
Temperature snapshot across Hyderabad
Several neighbourhoods in Hyderabad stayed close to 11–13°C:
• Secunderabad Cantonment: 11.2°C
• West Marredpally: 11.5°C
• Alwal: 11.9°C
• Qutbullapur: 12°C
• Gachibowli: 12.1°C
• Malkajgiri: 12.7°C
Most other localities reported between 13°C and 15°C.
Cold spell likely for two more days
Independent weather tracker T. Balaji (Telangana Weatherman) stated in his update on X: “A Similar range of temperatures is expected to continue for the next 2 days across Telangana. After that, a gradual improvement in temperature is expected.”
Reinforcing this, Sridhar added, “A slight rise in minimum temperatures is likely after mid-week once the wind pattern shifts and moisture begins to return.”
What residents should expect
Meteorologists expect nights and early mornings to remain cold for at least two more days. Daytime temperatures may remain normal, but the gap between day and night temperatures will remain wide.
