Hyderabad’s RGIA honoured as National Energy Leader by CII for efficiency initiatives

Hyderabad: Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad has been recognised for its energy efficiency initiatives, bagging the titles of ‘National Energy Leader’ and ‘Excellent Energy Efficient Unit’ at the 26th National Award Ceremony for ‘Excellence in Energy Management,’ organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on September 18.

This marks the 7th consecutive year that RGIA has received the ‘National Energy Leader’ award and the 9th consecutive year it has been named an ‘Excellent Energy Efficient Unit.’

More than 570 companies from across the country participated in the event.

Airport’s commitment to energy efficiency

Speaking at the occasion, Pradeep Panicker, CEO, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL), said: “RGIA has been at the forefront of adopting energy-efficient practices ever since it started operations. We are the first LEED Platinum certified airport in Asia. We are deeply aware of the importance of protecting our ecosystem and continuously strive to optimise our operational efficiencies to reduce carbon emissions.”

He further added, “The airport aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.”

Green energy use at RGIA

In a press release, GHIAL stated that RGIA currently harnesses renewable energy through its 10 MWp solar power plant, supplemented with green energy supplied by the Telangana State Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL).

Background

RGIA, operated by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd., has consistently invested in sustainable practices. The airport was the first in Asia to be certified LEED Platinum, a benchmark for sustainable design and operations. Its ongoing energy management initiatives have made it one of the leading airports in India for environmental responsibility.
