HYDRAA admits lapses in Yakutpura manhole incident, acts against DRF and MET staff
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has been held responsible for a five-year-old girl falling into an open manhole at Rein Bazar in Yakutpura. A preliminary inquiry confirmed lapses on the part of HYDRAA personnel.
HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath said, “Prima facie, HYDRAA is responsible, and the person in charge of the team will be held accountable. We will fix the responsibility and take stringent action on the erring personnel.”
Two DRF demoted, MET members dismissed
Following the inquiry, two DRF (Disaster Response Force) supervisors were demoted, and two MET (Monsoon Emergency Teams) members were dismissed by their contractor for failing to ensure the manhole was securely closed.
Child rescued safely
The incident occurred on Thursday morning as the child was on her way to school. A woman accompanying her noticed the accident and promptly rescued the girl, who escaped without injury.

Commissioner issues safety guidelines
Ranganath instructed all officials to ensure manholes across the city remain properly covered at all times. Any uncovered manholes should be immediately addressed in coordination with GHMC and HMWSSB authorities.
Public advised to report hazards
Residents have been urged to report any uncovered manholes to 9000113667. The Commissioner warned that strict punitive action will follow any future negligence in manhole maintenance.
