HYDRAA demolishes encroachments in Chintal Basti, expands nala’s capacity for drainage flow
Hyderabad: As part of the ongoing nala (drain) expansion works in the city, the special enforcement wing of HYDRAA carried out a significant demolition drive on Wednesday in Chintal Basti.
Encroachments on a key culvert located near Road No. 12, Banjara Hills, were removed after officials found that nearly 7 meters of the 15-meter-wide structure were illegally occupied on the Chintal Basti side.
During the operation, HYDRAA teams demolished unauthorised structures, including a sand depot, a small cement shop, and a tin shed belonging to a liquor compound. The culvert near the local pension office is also being fully widened as part of the initiative.
Focus on restoring the historic nala route
This demolition drive is part of a broader mission to revive the historic Bulkapur Nala, which begins at the Bulkapur Lake in Shankarpally and passes through Nagulapalli, Puppalaguda, Manikonda, Darga, Mehdipatnam, Banjara Hills Road No. 12, Chintal Basti and Tummalabasti, eventually merging into Hussain Sagar Lake.

Officials emphasised that removing encroachments along this route is critical for ensuring smooth drainage flow, especially during the monsoon season. HYDRAA is expected to continue similar operations in other parts of the city as part of the stormwater management and flood mitigation plan.
