Hyderabad: Amid tight police security, HYDRAA (Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency) razed down reportedly an illegally constructed multi-storey building of 684 yards at Ayyappa Society in Khanamet in Serilingampally on Sunday.
The officials said the action was taken following complaints from locals regarding the construction of a multi-storey building with a cellar and ground floor. The building was reportedly constructed ignoring a Telangana High Court order and GHMC notices.
As the building is located near the main road, the power was turned off, and police ensured that traffic flowed smoothly throughout the operation.
HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath accompanied by revenue and GHMC officials inspected the building on the field level on Saturday.
GHMC and HC ruled the construction illegal, say officials
During his visit, Ranganath verified the show cause notices given by the GHMC officials of the Chandanagar Circle and the orders of the High Court. He took cognizance of the violations of the multi-storey building, which included ignoring the show cause notice regarding demolition by the GHMC officials and the High Court order which confirmed it as an āillegal constructionā.
On February 14 last year, the GHMC issued a show cause notice stating that the building was constructed illegally and would be demolished. Apart from that, the GHMC officials also gave a speaking order on February 26, 2024. Later, the High Court also responded to a writ petition (No 10030 of 2024) on April 19, 2024, confirming the illegal construction and ordering action.
On June 13, 2024, the GHMC demolished a part of the same building based on the order of the High Court. The local officials informed the HYDRAA commissioner that the builders continued construction regardless of the demolition.
HYDRAA to initiate action against officials
In a statement, Ranganath said, "The builder closed the holes and went ahead with seven floors of illegal construction. The contempt petition was also moved to the high court and is under process. Almost all constructions in Ayyappa society are illegal. The HYDRAA will at least start demolishing constructions on which the High Court has given clear directions. A report on the officers responsible for permitting the illegal construction of the presently demolished building will also be sent to the government for action.
Elaborating further, the HYDRAA Commissioner said many hostels are coming up in Ayyappa society in these illegal buildings. Scores of students and employees are staying in these illegal structures. There is no fire safety, no building permission etc., he added.
"During my visit to the site on Saturday, I found drainage/ sewage flowing on the road. The local residents said that fecal matter, drainage, and sewage also flow onto the road early in the morning between 6-7 am. This is due to overload on the infrastructure (drainage pipes). A very pathetic state of affairs in this area. We will review these constructions with the GHMC commissioner and work with him in coordination to address the mushrooming of illegal constructions in Ayyappa society," Ranganath said.
