Hyderabad: HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath on Thursday inspected several flood-affected areas in the city, including Gayatri Colony in Ameerpet, Amar Society in Madhapur and Sriramnagar in Baglingampalli.
Identify main sources for waterlogging
The Commissioner noted that flooding in Ameerpet was easing due to ongoing desilting of canals and stressed the need to identify and address the root causes of waterlogging across the city. Residents of Gayatri Nagar, near Maitri Vanam, urged him to take up desilting works there as well to prevent flood risks.
Ranganath assured them that remedial measures would be taken.
Suggestions over lowering levels of Durgam Cheruvu
Locals of Amar Society and nearby colonies told the Commissioner that rising water levels in Durgam Cheruvu were causing overflow into their areas.
They suggested that lowering the lake’s water level could mitigate flooding.
Ranganath assured them that he would coordinate with Irrigation and GHMC officials to resolve the issue. He also pointed out that sudden cloudbursts dropping over 15 cm of rain in an hour were creating unexpected challenges, and said measures were needed to prepare for such extreme events.
Special drain to bring relief for Sriramnagar residents
At Sriramnagar in Baglingampalli, Ranganath directed that immediate steps be taken to drain floodwater by constructing a special drain connecting the locality to the Hussain Sagar flood canal. He emphasised that the issue should be resolved within two days.
Residents informed him that the old drainage system had been blocked due to encroachments on government land, worsening the flooding.
They said hundreds of houses were cut off, with residents forced to wade through waist-deep water.
Despite efforts to pump out the water using motor pumps, the problem persisted. Locals requested that the new drain be routed through available vacant land and linked to the Hussain Sagar flood canal to ensure a permanent solution.
