Hyderabad: In a decisive move against illegal encroachments on stormwater drains, the HYDRAA has launched action against Vasavi Constructions for allegedly obstructing a major floodwater canal between Kamuni Cheruvu and Maisamma Cheruvu, along the Bharatnagar–Kaitalapur stretch.

Illegal dumping in stormwater canal detected

Acting on complaints from residents, HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath conducted a field inspection near Hitec City Railway Station on Wednesday.

The inspection revealed that a section of the stormwater canal, linking Mullakatta Cheruvu, Kamuni Cheruvu and Maisamma Cheruvu, had been filled with mud, blocking the natural drainage path.

Mandatory buffer zones ignored

According to regulations, a 17-metre-wide canal must maintain a 9-metre buffer on both sides. However, officials found that Vasavi Constructions had ignored these norms and proceeded with illegal construction, raising concerns about potential flooding in the area.

HYDRAA orders immediate cleanup

Following the site visit, the HYDRAA Commissioner ordered immediate removal of the dumped material. JCBs and tippers were deployed to clear the canal, and the mud was dumped back into the premises of Vasavi Constructions, from where it was allegedly moved into the drain.

Police case registered

Irrigation officials lodged a complaint with the Kukatpally Police Station, based on which a case was registered against the builder. The charges pertain to illegal occupation and obstruction of public drainage infrastructure.

Concrete pillars also to be removed

In addition to the dumped soil, officials noted the presence of concrete pillars in the middle of the canal, reportedly meant to support a slab. HYDRAA officials stated these structures would also be removed to restore the natural flow of water.

Builder previously warned

Officials revealed that HYDRAA had earlier cautioned Vasavi Constructions during the launch of its Vasavi Sarovar project in Kaitalapur. Despite these warnings, the builder allegedly continued to violate drainage regulations.

Further monitoring underway

HYDRAA has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public water channels and warned that any future violations would invite strict action. The operation is part of a broader initiative to clear stormwater drains across the city ahead of the monsoon peak.
