Hyderabad: HYDRAA proposes model drainage corridor connecting three lakes to prevent flooding

Hyderabad: In a bid to permanently resolve flooding woes in Hyderabad’s key residential belts, HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath has announced plans to transform the 7.5-kilometre nala linking Masab Cheruvu, Dilawar Khan Lake and Pedda Amberpet Lake into a model drainage corridor.

He said the nala, which currently lacks proper width and structural strength, will be redesigned to handle future stormwater flows without disruption.

Comprehensive field inspection

Responding to complaints of waterlogging in surrounding colonies, Ranganath, along with Ibrahimpatnam MLA Mal Reddy Ranga Reddy, conducted an extensive field inspection on Wednesday. The team examined vulnerable stretches where inadequate drainage has resulted in flooding of residential areas.

At Jaalikunta, he inspected the under-construction double bedroom housing units, where work had stalled after water entered the basement structures.

Fewer constructions along the routes help pave for nala widening

The commissioner emphasised that a joint action plan involving the Revenue, GHMC and Irrigation departments will soon be prepared.

ā€œSince there are fewer constructions along certain parts of the nala right now, we should plan widening works with future urban needs in mind to avoid any bottlenecks,ā€ he stated.

Strict warning against encroachments

Issuing a stern warning, he said encroachments and illegal dumping of debris into lakes and nalas will not be tolerated. He added that protecting water bodies and drainage channels is crucial to prevent urban flooding. ā€œThose filling lakes with soil will face strict legal action,ā€ he cautioned.

Inspections at Karmanghat and Raviryala

Later, Ranganath visited Karmanghat and Badangipet areas to assess obstructions affecting nala widening works. At Uday Nagar Colony in Karmanghat, he directed officials to immediately commence nala expansion works.

He also inspected Raviryala Lake, where houses upstream are at risk of submergence and reviewed the lake’s inflow and drainage systems to ensure smooth water passage during monsoon.

Long-term urban flood mitigation

Concluding his inspection, the commissioner stressed that unless nalas and lakes are protected from encroachments and properly developed, Hyderabad will continue to face flooding threats during heavy rains.
