HYDRAA to lead monsoon-related emergency operations in Greater Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Telangana government has designated the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) as the lead agency for all monsoon-related emergency operations within Greater Hyderabad.

This move by the state government was aimed at strengthening Hyderabad’s monsoon preparedness and disaster response.

In a memo issued by the Metropolitan Area & Urban Development (MA&UD) Department, Secretary K Ilambarithi stated that the HYDRAA would be entrusted with responsibilities ranging from urban flood management to inter-agency coordination for relief efforts.

Clear mandate for Monsoon management

The move is grounded in two earlier government orders—G.O. Ms. No. 99 (dated July 19, 2024) and G.O. Ms. No. 191 (dated October 16, 2024)—which established HYDRAA and vested it with powers under Section 374B of the GHMC Act, 1955, to safeguard public assets and manage disaster-related functions.

HYDRAA’s core responsibilities will include clearing clogged catch pits during rainfall, dewatering waterlogged areas using pumps, implementing traffic diversions in flood-prone zones, conducting nala safety audits to prevent accidents, post-rain desilting of roads and stormwater drains, removing fallen trees, poles, and obstructions, ensuring uninterrupted flow in stormwater drains, and coordinating with HMWSSB, TGSPDCL, and other civic agencies

Joint implementation ordered

Both the Commissioner of HYDRAA and the Commissioner of GHMC have been instructed to take immediate action to operationalize these responsibilities ahead of the peak monsoon period.

This reorganization is expected to streamline disaster response, improve public safety, and minimize urban flooding in the city, ensuring that Hyderabad is better equipped to face seasonal challenges.
