By Newsmeter Network Published on 7 Dec 2024 6:02 AM GMTHyderabad: Indian Air Force’s Suryakiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) is set to perform a captivating aerobatic display over Hussain Sagar Lake on December 8.
This unique event, featuring Asia’s only nine-aircraft aerobatic squadron, has already created excitement among Hyderabad residents.
Flight Lieutenant Kanwal Sandhu, SKAT’s commentator and administrator, expressed confidence in the team’s performance. “Spectators can expect breathtaking aerobatic maneuvers, including loops, rolls, and crosses. It’s going to be an event to remember,” said Sandhu.
Practice Sessions Capture Public Attention
Ahead of the main event, Hyderabad residents witnessed rehearsal flights on December 4 and 5. The roar of jets drew curious onlookers across the city.
Zehra Fatima a Hyderabad resident shared her experience: “The sound of jets caught my attention one afternoon. Although I missed seeing them then, I made sure to watch the rehearsals the next day. The jets disappeared in seconds, but it was thrilling to see them in action. If the practice sessions were so thrilling, the main event is going to be priceless”.
The practice sessions provided a glimpse of what was to come, with pilots showcasing their precision flying and intricate formations.
About the Suryakiran Team
Established in 1996, the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team operates under the No. 52 Squadron from Bidar Air Force Station, Karnataka. The team consists of 12 highly skilled pilots led by Group Captain Ajay Dasarathi, an experienced Su-30 MKI pilot. The deputy leader is Group Captain Sidhesh Kartik.
The squadron’s expertise is evident in its performances, which include complex formations such as heart shapes and synchronized rolls. Over the years, the team has conducted more than 700 displays in India and represented the Indian Air Force at international air shows in countries like China, Sri Lanka, and Singapore.
Aircraft and Indigenous Modifications
The team flies the Hawk Mk 132, an advanced jet trainer manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). Initially used for fighter pilot training, the aircraft has undergone significant modifications. Smoke pods capable of producing saffron, white, and green trails were developed indigenously at the IAF Base Repair Depot in Nashik.
“These modifications showcase India’s growing aerospace capabilities and add a visual impact to our displays, symbolizing national pride,” Sandhu noted.
Spectators Anticipate a Memorable Event
As Hyderabad prepares for the air show, anticipation is building among locals.
Venkat Nair, a resident of Hyderabad and excited audience member, said, “I’ve been hearing about the Suryakiran team for years, but this is my first chance to see them live. It’s exciting to have such an event in the city. Parties, brunches, and movies are fun but this is going to be something new and unforgettable”.
The performance is expected to draw large crowds to Hussain Sagar Lake, where families, aviation enthusiasts, and curious onlookers will gather to witness the awe-inspiring maneuvers.
