IMD extends heavy rainfall alert for Hyderabad till August 17
Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended its heavy rainfall alert for Hyderabad till August 17, warning of continued showers that may worsen flooding in low-lying areas.
Several localities were already hit hard in the past week following intense downpours and a storm system that moved over the city.
Localities hit by waterlogging
The rains of the last seven days left multiple stretches submerged, with traffic and daily life disrupted in:
⢠Tolichowki ā Nadeem Colony, Shaikpet Road, Seven Tombs Road and Karwan experienced knee-deep water after back-to-back showers.
⢠Falaknuma ā Al Jubail Colony saw nala overflow flooding streets, cutting off vehicle access for hours.
⢠Madhapur ā The 100-feet road was reduced to a single lane in parts as stormwater failed to drain, slowing access to Hitec City.
⢠Ameerpet ā Maitrivanam and Budhanagar were among the hardest hit; a city bus was stranded in pooled rainwater last week.
⢠Manikonda ā Several apartment complexes reported basement flooding, damaging parked vehicles.
⢠Jubilee Hills ā Main approach roads, especially during evening showers, were at a standstill due to waterlogging.
⢠Khairatabad ā The junction and connecting roads saw prolonged jams on August 5 after heavy rain.
⢠Krishnanagar Colony (Yousufguda) ā One of the worst-hit areas; floodwater rose to nearly five feet, submerging vehicles and prompting emergency pumping operations.
⢠Lakdi-ka-Pul ā Rainwater pooling near the flyover caused major traffic delays.
⢠Dilsukhnagar ā Main market roads were partially submerged, affecting business activity.
⢠Langar House ā Intersections near the bridge were flooded, forcing traffic diversions.
⢠Raj Bhavan Road ā Holding structures failed to contain water, leading to roadside inundation.
⢠Nanal Nagar ā The low-lying junction saw continuous water stagnation during evening rains.
⢠KCP Junction ā Stormwater accumulation slowed movement in both directions.
⢠Gachibowli and Srinagar Colony ā Sudden downpours left lanes blocked by water, affecting IT corridor commuters.
Civic and government response
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy visited Ameerpet over the weekend, assuring residents of a permanent fix to stormwater stagnation.
The GHMC has been directed to draw up a long-term plan to overhaul drainage systems, strengthen nala embankments and create additional rainwater holding structures.
In the short term, portable pumps have been deployed in the worst-hit locations, and desilting of drains is underway ahead of the next spell of rain.
Advisory for commuters
Officials have urged the public to avoid travel through known flood-prone areas during heavy showers. Disaster response teams have also advised motorists not to attempt crossing visibly flooded roads, even if water appears shallow, as underlying damage to road surfaces has been reported in some stretches.
