Hyderabad: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave alert for Telangana, particularly in Adilabad and Komaram Bheem Asifabad districts.
This comes after temperatures across the state plunged over the weekend.
Officials have cautioned that the chilly conditions are likely to persist, urging residents to take precautions.
Temperatures Hit Single Digits Across the State
Several parts of Telangana recorded some of the coldest temperatures of the season on Sunday. Jainad and Bheempur in Adilabad district registered a freezing 6.3°C, while Kohir mandal headquarters in Medak saw 6.8°C. Kotagiri mandal headquarters in Nizamabad recorded 7.6°C, with Shivampet in Medak and Akbar-Bhoompally village in Siddipet registering 8.0°C and 8.6°C, respectively.
The outskirts of Sangareddy district, including areas near BHEL, reported 9.6°C, while Serilingampally and the University of Hyderabad in Rangareddy district recorded 9.7°C. Overall, 13 centers across the state documented single-digit temperatures, with Adilabad district being the coldest.
What’s Driving the Cold Wave?
According to T. Balaji, popularly known as Telangana weatherman, the clear skies and dry winds over the region are contributing to the steep decline in night temperatures. “This is a typical winter pattern for Telangana. However, the intensity this year is slightly higher, with some areas recording record lows,” he said.
Impact on Residents
The sudden drop in temperatures has led to changes in daily routines. Residents have turned off ceiling fans and turned to room warmers for relief.
Local hospitals have also reported an increase in cases of cold, fever, cough, and skin conditions like dryness attributed to the sharp temperature dip.
Precautions Advised
The IMD has advised people to layer up in warm clothing, stay hydrated, and avoid early morning outdoor activities when temperatures are at their lowest. Motorists have been cautioned about dense fog in the mornings, which could significantly reduce visibility.
Preparing for the Cold
As the cold wave intensifies, communities across Telangana are focusing on coping with the weather.
"Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and stay prepared for further temperature drops," said IMD.
