Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad has issued a yellow alert for Telangana, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across almost all districts today and tomorrow (August 17 and 18).

Severe storms expected

Severe storms are intensifying across Central Telangana, with heavy rains spreading from Nizamabad to Jagtial, Karimnagar, Bhupalpally, and parts of Peddapalli. Medak, Kamareddy, and areas in Sircilla are also expected to experience severe storm conditions within the next two hours. South Telangana is preparing for heavy rains later tonight, with warnings urging residents to stay indoors.

Forecast for Hyderabad

In Hyderabad, the IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers with occasional intense spells, accompanied by gusty winds.

The weather department highlighted the possibility of intense storms and heavy rainfall in parts of the city.

Statewide alerts

The IMDā€™s yellow alert is in effect across various districts, with severe weather expected to continue until August 18.

According to the weather bulletin, heavy rains are expected at isolated places in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, and several other districts. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging from 30-40 kmph are also anticipated.

Weatherman T Balaji, popularly known as Telangana Weatherman on X (formerly known as Twitter), echoed the IMDā€™s forecast. ā€œHyderabad is likely to experience a thunderstorm either this afternoon or tonight,ā€ Balaji stated.

He also warned of powerful thunderstorms in West and Central Telangana, which could lead to localised flooding and disruptions.

On Friday, Hyderabad experienced significant rainfall, with Golkonda recording the highest at 42.8 mm. The heaviest rainfall across the state was recorded in Karimnagar district, which saw a downpour of 172 mm.

The continued rain predicted by the IMD is expected to further increase the Stateā€™s total rainfall for the current Southwest Monsoon season.

Weather warning

The IMD has issued warnings for the next five days, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds expected across several districts in Telangana.

The department has advised residents to stay informed about the latest weather updates and take necessary precautions.

The anticipated heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are likely to impact daily life, and authorities are urging caution as these conditions persist.
