Hyderabad: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light rain and thunderstorms over the next few hours in Hyderabad and surrounding areas.
IMD issued a yellow alert early Monday morning, warning residents to stay cautious as weather conditions continue to fluctuate.
Districts Hit by Overnight Downpour
Several parts of Telangana, including Yadadri-Bhongir, Warangal, Khammam, and Mahabubabad, experienced heavy rainfall through Sunday night. In Yadadri, torrential rain lasting nearly three hours caused widespread flooding in low-lying areas, disrupting vehicular movement and affecting homes near the temple town. Locals reported severe waterlogging and slow-moving traffic until the early hours of Monday.
Meteorologists, K. S. Sridhar speaking to Newsmeter said, “The rainfall intensity in Yadadri and nearby districts was well above normal for the day. It was a result of strong convective activity in the lower atmosphere combined with high surface moisture.”
Hyderabad Under Cloud Cover
The city of Hyderabad began the week under heavy cloud cover, with drizzles in some areas and hazy skies elsewhere. While early morning forecasts placed the city under an orange alert, it was later revised to yellow as rainfall intensity reduced.
According to the IMD’s 6 a.m. nowcast, rainfall with surface wind speeds below 40 km/h is likely in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Malkajgiri, Nalgonda, Suryapet, and Hanamkonda. The department also cautioned about potential waterlogging in low-lying areas, which may cause traffic congestion during peak hours.
Forecast for the Coming Days
Weather models indicate that Hyderabad and adjoining districts will continue to witness light to moderate rainfall through mid-week.
• October 14 (Tuesday): Overcast skies with intermittent light rain expected. Temperatures are likely to stay around 31°C (day) and 19°C (night), with humidity between 54% and 73%.
• October 15 (Wednesday): IMD predicts moderate to heavy rainfall, with widespread clouding across the city. Temperatures may drop slightly to 30°C, and humidity levels will range between 46% and 67%.
• October 16 (Thursday): The rain may reduce to drizzle, though humidity levels could reach up to 83%, keeping the air damp and sticky.
Sridhar explained, “This pattern of sustained clouding and intermittent showers is typical during post-monsoon transitions. The current system over the Bay of Bengal is feeding moisture inland, which is why Telangana continues to see persistent rainfall.”
Wider Rainfall Pattern Across India
The IMD’s national bulletin shows that rain and thunderstorm activity will remain concentrated across South Peninsular, Central, and Eastern India this week. While rainfall has subsided in Delhi and Mumbai, parts of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha may continue to see unsettled weather.
“Localized thunderstorms and short bursts of heavy rain are expected due to shifting wind patterns. People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall,” said Sridhar.
Public Advisory
The IMD has urged citizens to exercise caution, particularly in flood-prone zones and areas with poor drainage systems. Authorities have been advised to remain on alert and ensure that emergency response teams are ready in case of further heavy downpours later in the week.
