Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has issued a yellow warning for strong surface winds and thunderstorms accompanied by lightning across Telangana for the next three days, continuing through June 26.
The alert covers all districts for wind-related hazards and several districts for lightning and thunderstorms.
High wind speeds could pose risks
According to the forecast, surface wind speeds are expected to range between 40 to 50 kmph, with the potential to cause damage to property and infrastructure.
āThese wind speeds may not seem extreme, but they are strong enough to uproot weak trees, damage temporary structures, and even bring down poorly maintained hoardings,ā said meteorologist KS Sridhar, speaking to NewsMeter. āResidents should secure loose objects and avoid outdoor activities during storm periods.ā
Temporary and makeshift structures, particularly in construction zones or open markets, are advised to be reinforced or dismantled to avoid potential projectiles.
Districts under thunderstorm and lightning risk
In addition to strong winds, thundershowers and lightning are expected in multiple districts. These include:
Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, MedchalāMalkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet and Jogulamba Gadwal.
āThe current weather pattern is driven by moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal and low-pressure activity in the region. This is typical for late June, but the intensity this year is slightly above average,ā explained Sridhar.
Public advisory
The IMD has urged people to remain indoors during heavy wind or lightning activity and to stay away from trees, power lines and water bodies.
Emergency services have also been put on alert, and district administrations have been asked to monitor vulnerable areas and clear debris to avoid blockages or accidents.
Rainfall is likely to be light to moderate
While light to moderate rainfall is expected across most districts, the primary concerns remain the wind and lightning activity. Commuters and outdoor workers have been advised to plan accordingly.
Monitoring to continue
The IMD has stated it will continue to monitor the evolving weather system and issue timely updates. Residents are advised to track alerts on official IMD platforms or Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services channels.
