IMD predicts rain in south Telangana, dry conditions in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Telangana as thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are likely to continue till Monday.

However, Hyderabad is expected to remain largely dry with mild morning haze over the next few days, even as some southern parts of the state are expected to receive some rainfall.

Rain and thunderstorm forecast

According to the daily weather bulletin from IMD Hyderabad, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is expected in parts of Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Gadwal and Nalgonda districts through the weekend.

Wind speeds may reach 30–40 km/h in isolated areas, particularly during evening hours.

“Moisture from the Bay of Bengal is still feeding the lower atmosphere over southern Telangana,” explained KS Sridhar, a senior meteorologist speaking to NewsMeter. “This moisture, combined with daytime heating, can trigger convective activity, leading to thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds till early next week.”

The rest of the state, including Hyderabad, Medchal, Sangareddy and Karimnagar, is likely to experience dry conditions till Saturday. The IMD has also noted the possibility of mist or shallow fog during early mornings, which may affect visibility for commuters.

Weather enthusiasts predict fresh rain spell after October 21

Independent weather observer T Balaji, known for his accurate regional forecasts, said that a fresh easterly wave could bring back rainfall activity after October 21.

“The current dry phase in central and north Telangana will end around October 21. We expect another round of showers in the southern and eastern districts as a new easterly system begins to influence weather patterns,” Balaji noted.

This indicates that post-monsoon weather systems are still active in the region, with changing wind directions expected to bring intermittent rain even as the monsoon season officially winds down.

Hyderabad to remain dry until weekend

For Hyderabad city, IMD has forecast no significant rainfall until Saturday.

The sky will remain partly cloudy, with morning mist and mild haze likely in areas such as Gachibowli, Banjara Hills, Uppal, and Kukatpally.

Day temperatures are expected to hover between 32°C and 34°C, while nights may remain pleasant at around 22°C–23°C.

“We do not see any major weather system affecting Hyderabad in the next 72 hours,” said Sridhar. “However, isolated cloud formations could still bring light drizzle in the city’s outskirts. The conditions are expected to change again after October 21, depending on the movement of the easterly wave.”

Residents are advised to plan travel accordingly, especially during early hours when mist could reduce visibility on arterial routes and highways.

Understanding the Yellow Alert

A yellow alert indicates the possibility of weather events that could cause local disruption.

The IMD issues this alert to prompt preparedness among residents and local administrations.

“People need not panic, but awareness is important,” said Sridhar. “Lightning and gusty winds are dangerous if ignored. Farmers working in open fields and commuters on two-wheelers should exercise caution during afternoon and evening hours.”

The department also urged citizens to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under trees or near metal structures.

Weather dynamics behind the current pattern

The present instability over Telangana is linked to residual monsoon moisture and weak trough formations over the Bay of Bengal.

While the southwest monsoon has begun retreating from northern India, southern states often experience short post-monsoon disturbances, especially when easterly winds from the sea interact with dry continental air.

Public advisory

1. Avoid open spaces during lightning. Seek shelter indoors or in vehicles when thunder is audible.

2. Secure household items on balconies or rooftops to prevent them from being blown away.

3. Motorists should reduce speed during misty mornings or sudden downpours.

4. Farmers and construction workers are advised to pause outdoor activity if thunderclouds appear nearby.

5. Track daily updates from IMD Hyderabad’s official website or social media handles for real-time alerts.

Looking ahead

The IMD’s extended outlook indicates that rainfall activity will decrease briefly after October 20, before reviving again later in the month. With the onset of the northeast monsoon expected in Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra soon, parts of Telangana may continue to see occasional rain events into early November.

For now, Hyderabad can expect a calm weekend, while districts in the south should remain alert to thunderstorms through Monday.

“Weather patterns are becoming increasingly variable post-monsoon,” said Sridhar. “Short bursts of intense rain followed by dry spells are typical for this time of year, and residents should remain prepared for sudden changes.”
