IMD predicts scattered thunderstorms in Hyderabad; more showers this week
Hyderabad: Hyderabad is likely to witness scattered thunderstorms on Monday evening, continuing a trend observed over the past few weeks.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD)-Hyderabad and independent weather trackers have indicated the possibility of intense rain spells accompanied by gusty winds across the city.
IMD forecast and alerts
The IMD-Hyderabad has issued a yellow alert indicating moderate rainfall for all six city zones: Charminar, Khairatabad, Kukatpally, LB Nagar, Secunderabad and Serilingampally.
According to the official forecast, “Light to moderate rain or thundershowers, at times intense spells accompanied by gusty winds, very likely to occur during the latter half of Monday.”
Meteorologist KS Sridhar, speaking to NewsMeter, said, “The city has been experiencing scattered thunderstorms for several weeks due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. Residents should remain cautious, especially during evening hours, as sudden gusty winds may cause minor damage or traffic disruptions.”
Independent forecaster predicts intense rainfall
Independent weather tracker T Balaji, in his early morning update for Monday, predicted intense spells of rainfall toward evening. “Dry weather is expected until afternoon, followed by one or two spells of scattered moderate to heavy rains in a few areas from afternoon to midnight,” he posted on X.
City traffic and local businesses hurt
The recurring pattern of thunderstorms has been affecting city traffic and local businesses. Meteorologists note that such weather is common during the pre-monsoon withdrawal phase in Hyderabad, driven by local convection and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal.
Week to see more showers
According to IMD-Hyderabad, the scattered rainfall pattern is likely to persist into the week, with occasional heavy spells in some areas.
“Residents can expect intermittent showers across the city in the coming days, with localised thunderstorms possible on most afternoons and evenings,” said Sridhar. Temperatures are expected to remain between 27°C and 33°C throughout the week.
Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution while commuting and avoid low-lying areas prone to waterlogging.
