Hyderabad: Several parts of Hyderabad were hit by intense rainfall and gusty winds on Thursday night, with central and eastern localities recording significant precipitation.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued another alert for heavy thundershowers and strong winds in the city today, as monsoon activity intensifies.

Core areas receive substantial rainfall

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS), Musheerabad recorded the highest rainfall at 41.8 mm, measured at the Jawahar Nagar Community Hall weather station. Another station in Musheerabad, located at the TSRTC Employee Building in Vidyanagar, registered 36.5 mm of rainfall.

Other notable rainfall figures include:

• Osmania University – 33.8 mm

• NGOs Colony, Vanasthalipuram – 32.8 mm

• Hayathnagar – 31.3 mm

• Uppal – 30.5 mm

• Boudha Nagar, Secunderabad – 27.5 mm

• Nacharam Ward Office – 26.3 mm

The affected areas also experienced intermittent power outages and traffic disruptions, especially in low-lying pockets.

IMD issues fresh warning

The Hyderabad Meteorological Centre has issued a forecast for more rainfall accompanied by gusty winds on Friday. ā€œHeavy to very heavy thundershowers are likely in isolated places across the city, particularly during the late afternoon and night hours,ā€ said meteorologist KS Sridhar, speaking to NewsMeter.

He also advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall periods. ā€œGusty winds can bring down tree branches and cause minor structural damage in congested areas. We urge residents to stay indoors when alerts are active,ā€ he added.

Drainage and traffic impact

With several localities such as Himayatnagar, Musheerabad, Secunderabad, Uppal, LB Nagar, and Saroornagar reporting overnight rain, waterlogging was observed in low-lying zones. Commuters faced difficulties in navigating through water-clogged roads during the early morning hours.

Some residents expressed frustration over recurring urban flooding.

Advisory for residents

Authorities have urged residents to:

• Stay updated via official IMD and GHMC alerts

• Avoid parking vehicles under trees or weak structures

• Call 040-29555500 or 100 for emergency GHMC monsoon services

The Hyderabad police have also advised caution for two-wheeler riders during high wind spells and warned against venturing into waterlogged underpasses. Rainfall is expected to persist over the weekend, with a gradual weakening by early next week, according to weather officials.
