Brij Bhushan has been accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers, Activists demanded his immediate arrest and justice for the victims.
The protest was organized to support the wrestlers who have brought laurels to the country. Those who participated in the protest include Sandhya POW, Jasveen Jairath, Sarah Mathews, Majid Shuttari, Padmaja Shaw, and Imran Siddiq. Students and other supporters too joined in.
Protestors urged the central government to stop shielding Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. They emphasized the need for accountability and swift action against the accused MP. They also demanded his arrest on charges of sexual offenses under the POSCO Act and rape allegations.
"It was a spontaneous coming together because we all feel very strongly about the injustice being meted out to the girls who are protesting and demanding justice. Police are not taking any action, and both the Home Minister and the Prime Minister showed indifference to the plight of these young girls," Jasveen Jairath, one of the activists, said.
Jairath criticized the Supreme Court committee's handling of the matter, stating: "The girls were told by the committee members that they had misunderstood the situation, blaming the victim for victimization. It is a total violation of the dignity of these women."
"When you're being sexually assaulted or bothered, does it always have to be captured on video or audio? It's ridiculous."
The activists highlighted the struggles faced by female wrestlers and raised awareness about the alleged misconduct. Their protest resonated with the general public, conveying a clear message for justice. The demonstration served as a reminder of the urgent need to address and prevent sexual harassment and assault cases.
The protest was spontaneous and not led by any NGO or political party. When the police arrived, they were confused and asked who the leader of the protest was. All the activists responded, āWe are all leaders.ā
Explaining the choice of the Maqdoom statue as the protest location, Jairath said, "Maqdoom is particularly known for his voice against the establishment and fight for justice. So we decided to have it in front of the statue as a direct conflict between ordinary citizens and the indifferent government."
