Hyderabad: Justice Sujoy Paul has been appointed the Acting Chief Justice of Telangana High Court by President Droupadi Murmu.

The decision follows the transfer of Justice Alok Aradhe, the former CJ of Telangana to Bombay High Court in the same capacity. He is expected to take the oath of office as the new Chief Justice in a few days.

The Ministry of Law and Justice of the Government of India has issued orders about the change. Justice Paul is the most senior judge on the Telangana High Court.

Justice Paul was born on June 21, 1964, and holds a BCom, MA and LLB degree. In 1990, he registered with the Madhya Pradesh Bar Council. He attended Pandit LS Jha Model Higher Secondary School. He graduated, post-graduated and received his LLB from Rani Durgavati University in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

Justice Paul was admitted to the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh as an advocate in 1990 and practised Civil, Constitutional, industrial, and Service Law, as well as other branches of law, before various courts. On May 27, 2011, Justice Paul was appointed as a judge of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh in Jabalpur and became a permanent judge on April 14, 2014.

Justice Paul requested that the Supreme Courtā€™s collegium remove him from the Madhya Pradesh HC to another High Court in February of last year since his son was practising law in the same court. The SC collegium reassigned him to the Telangana High Court in response to his request.

On March 26, 2024, he took oath as a Telangana judge. Justice Alok Aradhe was named Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court on July 19, 2023, and took his oath of office on July 23, 2023. He previously served as the Karnataka High Courtā€™s acting Chief Justice.
