Hyderabad: Telangana IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao on Monday felicitated traffic sub-inspector A Ilaiah and constable A Venkateshwarlu who challaned one of his vehicles for driving in the wrong direction at Bapu Ghat on October 2.

Rama Rao commended the duo for doing their duty sincerely. He stated that rules were applicable for everyone, be it citizens or public representatives. He also stated that the government stands by the officers like Ilaiah who work sincerely.

KTR said he was not in the vehicle when the incident took place. The minister said he paid the fine to send out the right message to other leaders and people who break rules and do not pay the fine.

Stating that the rules were the same for all, he urged citizens to follow traffic rules.

On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, a vehicle of KTR's convoy violated the traffic rules and drove in the wrong direction at Bapu Ghat near Langar Houz.

Traffic sub-inspector Ilaiah and constable Venkateshwarlu on duty stopped the vehicle for disobeying the rules. This angered the local TRS leaders, who shouted at the cops for stopping KTR's vehicle. While the SI and constable said they were not aware that it was KTR's vehicle, higher officials intervened and allowed the vehicle to pass. However, it became top news on television channels and social media.

In the next two days, it triggered a debate on traffic violations by VIPs. Netizens questioned why there are different rules for a common man and the chief minister's son. They also questioned the authority of KTR. Sensing that the incident has dented his reputation, KTR quickly went into damage-control mode. On his instructions, the traffic police raised the challan on his vehicle. KTR immediately paid the fine amount.

Later, he called SI and the constable to Pragathi Bhavan and appreciated them for doing their duties sincerely. He also felicitated the traffic cops with a shawl and bouquet.

The minister said the rules are the same for all. He said the government would stand by the officers like Ilaiah who worked sincerely.
