KTR pushes for Centre’s aid to develop Telangana’s roads, metro, sanitation

Hyderabad: Municipal Administration and Urban Development minister KT Rama Rao sought Central Government’s support for public transportation, sanitation management, and rice allocation in Telangana.

KTR on Saturday met union minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri and union minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal to discuss key requests for support in various areas about Telangana’s development.

On improving public transportation and the road network, the MA&UD minister requested approval for the 26 km-long Hyderabad Metro Rail line from BHEL to Lakdikapul and five kilometres Metro line from Nagole to LB Nagar. He said that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project was submitted by the state government.

Regarding public transportation and road network improvements, the minister said, “I reiterate the urgent need for the approval of the Hyderabad Metro Rail line from BHEL to Lakdikapul and the Nagole to LB Nagar Metro line. The state government has already submitted the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for these projects.”

According to the minister, the cost of providing a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) in Kokapet is estimated at Rs 3,050 crore. To develop Kokapet as a new Central Business District (CBD), he requested financial assistance. He requested Rs 450 crore as Central Government’s financial contribution to the project.

“We have identified 104 additional corridors for development, with an estimated cost of Rs 2,400 crore. I urge the Central Government to support us with a contribution of Rs 800 crore,” said KTR, addressing the extension of missing link roads to the Outer Ring Road (ORR).

Regarding cleanliness and waste management, the minister said, “We seek the Central Government’s financial support for scientific treatment and disposal of legacy leachate and other waste resources, including the procurement of specialised vehicles and the establishment of modern transfer stations.”

For the proposed sanitation project, minister KT Rama Rao stated, “The development of three Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs) clusters for liquid waste collection in Hyderabad Urban Agglomeration (HUA) requires an estimated Rs 3,722.82 crore. We appeal to the Central Government to sanction 20% of the project cost, i.e., Rs 744.56 crore.”

Minister KT Rama Rao also said, “In collaboration with the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), the state government has developed a blueprint for the Sanitation Innovation Hub in Telangana, with seed commitment from the state.”

Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri commended the Sanitation Hub initiative and said, “The Telangana government’s Sanitation Hub with its creative concepts will effectively address numerous challenges in the development of municipalities.” The union minister requested the state to share its innovative ideas at our upcoming meeting.

Minister KT Rama Rao extended an invitation to both Union Ministers to visit Hyderabad and witness the state’s progress in various developmental projects, including housing, road infrastructure, sanitation, waste management programs, and more.
