Hyderabad: L V Prasad Eye Institute ranked among top 10 Global Eye Research Institutions

Hyderabad: L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) stands eighth worldwide by SCImago Institutions Rankings 2023 in Ophthalmology (health) category. It is the only Indian institute ranked among the top 10 global eye health institutions for its research output by the SCImago rankings agency.

A first for an Indian Eye Institute, and a major milestone for Indian eye and medical research.

The SCImago rankings agency ranks institutions from around the world based on research output (including research publications, technology innovation and societal impact).

The SCImago ranking agency, a Spanish global ranking organization, evaluates institutions worldwide based on their research output. The ranking is calculated by building a composite indicator that combines and standardizes the quality and quantity of research publications, innovation (patents and patent citations) and the societal impact of research output (the social media conversations around published research). These composite values are calculated by looking at data from a variety of research and web analytics datasets.

Last year, SCImago ranked institutions by speciality for the first time, and LVPEI featured in that top ten list too. They looked at five years of data to produce the rankings for 2023.

About LVPEI

Established in 1987, L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Prevention of Blindness, is a comprehensive eye health facility. It has served over 34.14 million (3 crores 41 lakh people), with more than 50% entirely free of cost, irrespective of the complexity of care needed. The Prof Brien Holden Eye Research Centre at LVPEI, a Centre of Excellence, focuses on all the components of ocular research, from basic science to clinical to translational to public health and vision rehabilitation research.

LVPEI also works in active collaboration with many global and national institutes. LVPEI clinicians and scientists work at the cutting edge of eye research. Their work ranges from investigating the genetic and molecular basis of eye diseases to arriving at creative modes of managing vision-threatening conditions. They are also involved in several clinical trials that evaluate the safety and efficacy of novel drugs and devices.

To date, over 5000 publications have been published by the institute. For the past two consecutive years, several researchers from LVPEI have been ranked among the top 2% of global eye researchers by the Sanford University study.
